Digital Detox – What is it and Why Should you Do It?
I’ve lost count on how many times a day I’ve said ‘what would I do without technology?’ But then there are those times that technology burns me out. My eyes get tired, I find it hard to focus, and I don’t get nearly enough done.
That’s when the idea of a digital detox crossed my mind. I take such good care of my body and mind, but then I poison it with 24/7 screen time between my phone, technology and the computer. I feel like I’m always ‘on.’
I decided it was time to have some ‘off’ time and do a digital detox. I knew doing it long-term wouldn’t be beneficial for me or my family, so instead I choose to digitally detox weekly, 24 hours at a time, and here’s what I’ve discovered.
What is a Digital Detox?
A digital detox can be anything you want it to be. For me, I knew going ‘off’ for 24 hours a week was enough. I need technology to run my business, so I had to choose a day I could just step away from it and enjoy life.
For you, it could be that you give it up for a few days or even a week at a time. You choose what feels right for you.
What can you Benefit from a Digital Detox?
Here’s what I couldn’t wait to share – the benefits of a digital detox.
•I felt better overall – I didn’t realize how much digital technology drains me. Whether I’m looking at other people’s lives on social media, answering work emails, or always accessible via text – it’s draining. Knowing I have 24 hours a week where no one can get a hold of me (except emergencies) provides such peace of mind.
•I have fewer headaches – Technology is hard on the eyes, which leads to headaches. I didn’t realize how often I stared at a screen until I didn’t look at one for 24 hours. After a couple of weeks I noticed my eyes could focus better and my brain didn’t feel as fuzzy.
•I am more productive – Technology can be great, but it can also be a great distraction. If you try a detox, I bet you’ll be amazed at how much time you have in your day. At first, it was a little unnerving, but eventually I learned to love my free time.
•I was more present – I didn’t realize how ‘non-present’ I was with my family and friends with a phone, computer, or tablet near me all the time. You hear the notification sound and you instantly get distracted even if you don’t mean to. Not having any ‘noises’ around me allowed me to spend ‘real time’ with my loved ones.
Final Thoughts
I encourage everyone to try a digital detox even if it’s only for one day a month. Any time you can break away from technology you’ll benefit. Who knows, maybe you’ll find something else you love to do, or you’ll just find it easier to relax and unwind for a day or two.
Let me know how your digital detox goes and if you’d do it again. I know I will continue doing it!
